True Drinks and Woodcraft Rangers Fight Childhood Obesity

LOS ANGELES —  The shocking facts are part of the headlines: Los Angeles County is falling behind other US cities in its push to lower childhood obesity among poor children. Childhood obesity rates have risen from 17% to 20% in L.A. County. (Los Angeles Times)

Across the country there is a desperate rally to stop this epidemic in America. As high as the White House proper nutrition is a number one priority. But for many children, the gateway to change isn’t about what they EAT. It’s about what they DRINK.

Woodcraft Rangers, with almost a century of dedication to youth development in the LA area, is teaming up with True Drinks to roll out AquaBall Naturally Flavored Water. Together they’re starting summer with a new initiative: healthy hydration, making better choices about what children drink on hot summer days.

Kids regularly quench their thirst with sodas and high fructose ‘juices.’ With each additional sugary drink a child consumes per day, the risk of obesity increases by an astonishing 60 percent. “Extra sugar can lead to a variety of health problems including diabetes,” said Woodcraft Rangers CEO Chris Johnson. “We know kids prefer to drink something sweet. AquaBall gives us a viable option.”

AquaBall Naturally Flavored Water has No Artificial colors or flavors and is Vitamin Enhanced with B3, B5, B12 & C. Sweetened with Stevia, an all-natural sweetener, it contains Zero Calories.

True Drinks is providing Woodcraft Rangers with thousands of AquaBalls for both summer and school year programs for children in Los Angeles County. AquaBall will be key for summer hydration in outdoor activities and also be used in educational programs so students can analyze and compare with other popular beverages, to help them , as the US Department of Health says, “Rethink Their Drink.”

AquaBalls are colorfully wrapped in America’s favorite cartoon characters, princesses and superheroes. True Drinks has licensing agreements with Disney and Marvel in order to make sure their healthy drink is visually appealing to the children who need it most.

“Childhood obesity is a national shame… and a national responsibility,” says True Drinks CEO Lance Leonard. “Part of the solution is providing better choices for hydration. What our children need is a healthy alternative.”

“We’re committed to changing unhealthy drinking habits,” explained Johnson. “True Drinks shares our commitment and we’re very thankful for their support. We believe educating our children on the negative impact of sugary sweet drinks will change lives.”
